What College Kids Wish They Knew When They Were High School Juniors
My neighbor's son recently graduated from high school. He came to me to during a barbeque this past weekend to discuss his plans for college. Over the years, I have found it rather amazing what students can learn about themselves and the world as they come to the end of their high school years. It is just as interesting to touch base with a student that has gone off to college - after their vocabulary has expanded to include phrases like "In hindsight." I thought I would compile some of those nuggets of advice and share them with students set to begin their junior year of high school this fall. Many of these students were in the same position you are currently entering into. These thoughts are a compilation of what my neighbor's son and others have learned during their college search and application process and through their first two years of college.
Graduating high school seniors and college students said:
-
The cumulative GPA you have by the end of your junior year is the GPA you will put on your college application. Work hard now. It is harder to raise your GPA in your senior year than you think it will be.
-
Start looking at colleges in the spring; start your essays over the summer. It will mean more to you than you think when it comes time to share who you are with admissions committees.
-
When visiting campuses, ask yourself, "Could I feel at home here?"
-
Ask about the negatives when you visit colleges, even the best colleges are susceptible to problems with crime, partying, poor administrative services and other issues.
-
Quick campus tours can help you narrow your list. Fully visit your final choices. If you move too quick you can miss the "other" side of the buildings they don't photograph and upload to their website.
-
Really like your back-up schools because you may need them.
-
Don't just pick a school because your friend likes it. You won't know most of them after your first year. And as you get older you realize that the most important thing you can do in college is prepare yourself for professional life, whatever that may be for you. Don't be a drifter.
-
Don't get hooked on just one school - you might not get in there. You never know if your spouse is waiting for you somewhere else - really, be that positive - life is incredible like that.
-
Your ideas about what you want will change over time. If you really don't want to be a film or dance major then find schools with a broader range of majors and opportunities.
-
Don't obsess over the college process - you still need to do well in high school. But find balance and time to enjoy your youth as well; once you get to college no one cares about what you did in high school. Turn the leaf over and start anew.
-
Don't just focus on school. Find something you love and make a difference. Get good at something and share it with other people.
-
Don't let the college process dictate what activities you do. Do what you enjoy and be committed to following through.
-
Start forming good relationships with teachers now so you have people you can ask to write recommendations for you. They are important and it sucks to get a lame recommendation.
-
Ask your teachers early to write letters for you so they have time.
-
If you want to submit artwork with your applications or audition, talk to your art, drama, or music teachers now about what you will need to do.
-
Look at some applications (paper and online) now to learn what they ask. Plan ahead and don't make careless mistakes on your application, like choosing the wrong gender (eekk).
-
Plan carefully to take your SATs and Subject Tests (where they are required) so you can fit them all in.
-
Consider taking the ACT. Research ACT and SAT differences and similarities. You may find that you are better suited to one over the other. Current experts advise to pick one test and prepare for one test.
-
Use the Common Application if at least two schools you are applying to use it.
-
Save an excellent, highly graded writing sample from junior year.

I usually wear a size 9 in juniors clothes...what size is that in misses or women size. How does that all work
it all depends on the brand, fit etc etc
if you are talking about jeans then I would guess you would be an 8 in womens or misses
